David Wannen, Bass-Baritone
David began his singing career at Gonzaga High School in Washington DC in the spring and
fall musicals. There he fell in love with the stage, performing in such roles as Sky
Masterson in Guys and Dolls, Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods, and Matt in
The Fantastiks. He received two prestigious scholarships to attend the Eastman School of
Music at the University of Rochester, New York, where he studied voice with John Maloy.
David graduated with honors and a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance in 2000.
David attended a post-graduate year at the University of Rochester under the Take Five Scholars program where he concentrated in Theatre and Film, including acting, directing, film production and history, dramatic literature and gender studies. He also studied lyric theatre directing under Steven Daigle, the artistic director of the Eastman Opera Theatre. He graduated from the University in 2001. In the summer of 2000, David joined the Ohio Light Opera Company where he has worked three consecutive summers, performing over 20 different roles in 180 performances. His roles have included Tommy in Brigadoon, Jigger Craigin in Carousel, the Boatswain in HMS Pinafore, Old Adam in Ruddigore and Antonio in The Gondoliers. The Company is unique in America, offering a full season in revolving repertory and entirely devoted to the art form of operetta. The Company performs two Gilbert and Sullivan productions, European operetta, and one American musical theatre production each summer. In 2001 David moved to New York to pursue his career. His work there has included the role of Don Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Jade Opera Company. He studies voice with Mark Oswald, Metropolitan Opera principal soloist. His continuing goals include Opera and Contemporary Musical Theatre. He has coached with Andrew Byrne in musical theatre and has studied acting with Thomas Waites at the School for Film and Television. |
